Overcoming barriers to capital flows

Institutional investors – who hold most of global wealth – direct most of their capital into public markets. Despite their potential to drive climate action and sustainable development, emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) make up only a small share of institutional investment portfolios. This means that even a small shift in public market investments toward EMDEs could mobilise billions to the markets that need it most.

MOBILIST’s research explores the factors that drive – and limit – capital flows to EMDEs. This includes examining how investors make allocation decisions, the role of risk perceptions and return expectations, and the growing influence of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors. By understanding and addressing these barriers, MOBILIST hopes to unlock new capital for investment into emerging and frontier markets.
